TOUR OF BASILICATA (4 days)
1st Day – Matera:
Arrival in Matera. In the afternoon meeting with the guide for visit “Matera’s Caves”: Romanic city, rupestrian churches and baroque city. Sassi represents the ancient part of Matera. Developed around the “Civita”, they are a city carved into the limestone, locally called “tufo”, an articulated residential scheme perched on slopes of a deep valley with unique and natural characteristic: the “Gravina”. Elegant and articulated buildings are alternate with underground mazes and cavernous meanderings, creating a unique landscape of a great effect. The different phases of urban transformation, the complex morphology of the territory, the contrast between rocks and architecture, canyon and steeples created during the ages one of the best scenery in uniqueness and beauty. At the end movingto the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
2nd Day – Pietrapenta / Miglionico / Altamura:
Breakfast in hotel. In the morning meeting with the guide and moving with bus to Pietrapenta to visit the “Peccato Originale” crypt, known as the Sistina Chapel of rupestrian churches in Matera. There are beautiful frescoes of IX century. Moving to Miglionico to visit the Malconsiglio Castle and Saint Maria Maggiore church, where is displayed the beautiful polyptich of Cima da Conegliano. Lunch in a typical restaurant. In the afternoon moving for Cracco, ghost town abandoned in 60 ages and famous for filming “The Passion” of Mel Gilbson. Going back to the hotel and overnight stay.
3rd Day – Melfi / Venosa:
Leaving with bus Melfi, ancient capital of Norman kingdom. You can admire the magnificent Swabian Norman castle where nowadays there is the national archeological museum. At the end visit of Saint Maria Assunta. Lunch in a restaurant. In the afternoon leaving for Venosa. Don’t miss the beautiful Incompiuta church, visited for thousands years by a lot of tourist. After you will visit the Santissima Trinità abbey richly decorated with altars and Norman graves. Visit to Jewish catacombs and at the end walking in the Medieval historical centre. Going back to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
4th Day – Castelmezzano (Dolomiti Lucane):
Breakfast in the hotel. Leaving with bus for Castelmezzano, evocative place in the heart of Dolomiti Lucane. Meeting with the guide and tour into the historical centre. During the walking, you can perceive into the town the signs of Templari occurrence, to the small church of Saint Maria dell’Olmo. From this place a small track leads to the ruins of Norman castle. By the high you can enjoy of a breathtaking view on the valley. Free lunch.
