TOUR OF MONTI DAUNI (4 days)
1st Day: Arrival with own means of transportation in Troia, ancient founded in 1909 and born on the ruins of ancient Roman city of Aecae. Very interesting is the cathedral of Assunta, maximum expression of Romanic in Puglia. In Troia also deserve to be visited the church of Saint Basilio, probably of the Byzantine period, the Civic Museum and Diocese Museum. Moving to the hotel in the area of Foggia. Dinner and overnight stay.
2nd Day: Breakfast in the hotel and tour of the most important city of the trip: Lucera. Very important city of Daunia before, Roman colony during the Augustan Age (one of the biggest city of the region), headquarters of Gastaldi during the Longobard period but mosty with Federico II enjoyed its maximum splendour. Of the Roman city are still preserved the remains of a monumental amphitheatre built in the I sec. A.C. From the XIII sec. is the castle built by Carlo I d’Angiò on the ruins of the ancient fortress of the Roman city and the monumental palatium related to Federico’s II period. Also the Duomo of the city and the church of Saint Francesco date back to Angevin dynasty. The Civic Museum Giuseppe Fiorelli is very important for the findings of Roman and Medieval ages. Lunch in restaurant. In the afternoon leaving for Pietramontecorvino. This typical city perched on Monti Dauni is officially recognized between “the most beautiful hamlet in Italy”, it deserves to be visited. The alleyways of the historical centre and the restoration works make this small town a gem of the Medieval architecture. At the end we will leave for Volturino crossing the town of Motta Montecorvino and an unspoilt nature with amazing views. In Volturino you can dmire an unique panorama from Tavoliere delle Puglie to Gargano. Return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.
3rd Day: Breakfast and leaving for Ascoli Satriano. Inhabited already in the IX-VII sec. by the old population of Dauni, it became a Romanian municipium. It preserves testimonies of Daunian period and Hellenistic in the Archeological Park of Daunia on the “hill of Snake” and the valuable remains of a late-ancient villa next to the park of Faragola. In the Diocese Museum you can admire a lot of Daunian period’s remains but specially the famous Grifoni, marble ornaments of Romanian period known all over the world. Lunch in a typical restaurant. In the afternoon visit of Deliceto, characterized by the typical medieval appearance. Normale castle of 1073 is very interesting. You also should visit the “Chiesa Madre”, a very ancient structure (VII- VIII sec.) and the Virgin of Loreto Chapel, built in XVI sec. At the end visit of Saint Agata di Puglia (recognized as one of the most beautiful hamlet) and guided tour in the historical centre characterized by the monumental Medieval castle. Back to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
4th Day: Breakfast in the hotel. Moving to Bovino and visit to the historical centre recognized with orange flag by Italian Touring Club. Visit to the Cathedral and to the Castle. At the end leaving for Orsara di Puglia to visit the historical centre with small squares and ancient buildings to breathe fresh air. Lunch in a typical restaurand. End of services.
